How to speed up Vista

  1. Use Autoruns from Sysinternal and switch off all the items that start up with the system.
  2. Use CCleaner to clean out the crap.
  3. Defrag the hard drive.
  4. Remove all the graphics effects.
  5. Install Service Pack 2 and all the latest updates.
  6. Increase size of Swap-file: fist switch off swapping altogether, restart. Select different drive from Windows for Swap-file. Make swap 2+Gb in size.
  7. Switch off services:
    • Computer Browser
    • Desktop Window Manager Session Manager
    • Distributed Link Tracking Client
    • IP Helper
    • Offline Files
    • Portable Device Enumerator Service
    • Program Compatibility Assistant Service
    • ReadyBoost
    • Table PC Input Service
    • WebClient
    • Windows Error Reporting Service

Note: Do not disable Network Location Awareness service. Without it network does not work.

Using Eclipse for PHP development with SVN

  1. Download Eclipse for PHP from here: http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/
  2. Unpack it for into your working folder.
  3. Launch it. For the first time it will ask a few questions about working folders, etc.
  4. Now you need to install Subclipse (SVN client integrated in Eclipse)
    • Help -> Install New Software -> Add -> Type “Subclipse” for name and “http://subclipse.tigris.org/update_1.6.x” for URL.
    • Select all the options of available plugins
    • Agree with all the questions it is going to ask you -)
  5. Create SVN repository. In Linux issue command svnadmin create /path/to/reppo
  6. Now need to link existing repository with Subclipse: In Eclipse switch to SVN pane, right click on white space under Repositories and select New -> Repository. As URL give it this: file:////C:path/to/svn_reppo/ Important to get correct number of forward slashes!!
  7. Create new PHP project and commit it to the repository: Right click on Project -> Team -> Share Project. Select SVN and choose the repository you have just created. This will commit first version of the project.
  8. To commit files/project do right click on the file/folder -> Team -> Commit -> add notes

Prevent OpenDNS From Redirecting Google Searches

Got OpenDNS? search is redirected to pesky Yahoo? Want your Google back?

In Firefox go to About:config and change key keyword.url to http://www.google.com/search?q=

For IE it is a bit more complex:
In registry find HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes

If Windows Live Search is your default search engine in Internet Explorer 7, open {0633EE93-D776-472f-A0FF-E1416B8B2E3A} and set the value of URL as

http://search.live.com/results.aspx?q={searchTerms}

In case of Google, open the corresponding key and set the value of URL as

http://www.google.com/search?q={searchTerms}

Technicals: I think OpenDNS redirects Google Searches to OpenDNS Guide if the “source” parameter is present in the search URL. Remove that from the address and OpenDNS would stop redirecting Google searches.

How to determine what type of WinXP installation disk you have

Open the I386 folder on your XP CD and find a file called SETUPP.INI. That file will contain a line starting PID=
The numbers following the ‘=’ indicate which version of XP is on the disc.

How to change a product key on Windows XP

Note We recommend that you run System Restore to create a new restore point before you follow these steps.

Deactivate Windows

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\WPAEvents
  4. In the topic pane, right-click OOBETimer, and then click Modify.
  5. Change at least one digit of this value to deactivate Windows.
Reactivate Windows and add new product key

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type the following command, and then click OK.
    %systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a
  3. Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to activate Windows, and then click Next.
  4. Click Change Product key.
  5. Type the new product key in the New key boxes, and then click Update.

    If you are returned to the previous window, click Remind me later, and then restart the computer.

  6. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to verify that Windows is activated. You receive the following message:
    Windows is already activated. Click OK to exit.
  7. Click OK.
